Career-School Siege Lifted
As a school owner, regardless of which candidate you wanted to win last night, President-Elect Trump is good for your business. The career school industry has been under siege during the Obama Administration. Heightened scrutiny by the U.S. Department of Education has resulted in the closure of Corinthian Colleges, ITT Technical Institute, and too many small independents to name. And enrollment has suffered not only because the economy recovered but also because of the vocal reprisals of passionate Democratic Senators like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders who had the backing of the White House. The media coverage of these powerful members of the Senate HELP committee, which oversees the industry, ultimately penetrated the consumer base and the voting public which, in turn, influenced state lawmakers to react by increasing state regulation of the industry. So my use of the term “siege” is not an exaggeration. The federal government, the state governments, the media, and the public have made school owners (including investors) feel surrounded with no visible way out.
That began to change last night. The election result means that ACICS is much less likely to be shuttered now. In fact, if I had been considering changing accreditors, I’d probably rethink that decision and wait things out now. It also means that the industry’s lobby will again have a voice on Capitol Hill and indeed in the White House. Clearly the President-Elect as proprietor of the now-defunct Trump University has an affinity for the industry. It also likely means that the lawsuit against Trump University is much less likely to result in damaging legal precedent that could be used against other nontraditional schools.
The combined impact of the election result is this: large institutions no longer need to feel compelled to spend so much money on internal compliance resources. You can confidently outsource the work at a lower cost and increase your profit margins. Indie career schools can also confidently outsource compliance so you can refocus on enrollment and preserve your business for yourself and your children.
